The Vietnam War started in the 1950s, according to most historians, though the conflict in Southeast Asia had its roots in the French colonial period of the 1800s. The United States, France, China, the Soviet Union, Cambodia, Laos and other countries would over time become involved in the lengthy war, which finally ended in 1975 when North and South Vietnam were reunited as one country. The following Vietnam War timeline is a guide to the complex political and military issues involved in a war that would ultimately claim millions of lives.
The War Dead: By the end of the war, some 58,220 Americans lose their lives. Vietnam would later release estimates that 1.1 million North Vietnamese and Viet Cong fighters were killed, up to 250,000 South Vietnamese soldiers died and more than 2 million civilians were killed on both sides of the war

"Lễ Chiến Sĩ Trận Vong hay Ngày Chiến Sĩ Trận Vong (Memorial Day) là một ngày Lễ Liên Bang (Federal Holiday) tại Hoa Kỳ - vào ngày Thứ Hai cuối cùng trong tháng 5 hằng năm. Trước kia với tên gọi là Decoration Day, ngày lễ này tưởng niệm những quân nhân Hoa Kỳ đã tử nạn trong lúc phục vụ.
Ngày lễ đầu tiên tưởng niệm những quân nhân cả hai miền Bắc (Union) và Nam (Confederate) đã tử nạn trong Nội Chiến Hoa Kỳ (American Civil War). Sau Thế Chiến Thứ Nhất (World War I), ngày lễ này bắt đầu được mở rộng để tưởng niệm các binh sĩ bị tử nạn trong các cuộc chiến khác.
Từ năm 1971, Lễ Chiến Sĩ Trận Vong chính thức trở thành ngày Lễ Liên Bang ở Hoa Kỳ. Vào ngày này, người Mỹ đi viếng thăm các nghĩa trang và các đài tưởng niệm; lá cờ Hiệp Chủng Quốc Hoa Kỳ được để rũ cho đến trưa theo giờ địa phương.
